When we first decided that we were going to Ireland, one of the places we decided we must see is the seaport town of Cobh (pronounced cove) for a couple of reasons: firstly, we love the water and any village along the coast is appealing. Secondly, Cobh, formerly known as Queenstown until 1920, was the final departure point for Titanic. 123 passengers embarked, sadly, only 44 of those survived. Regrettably, we did not have time on this trip to Ireland to travel to Belfast in Northern Ireland, where Titanic was built and there is a memorial. Next time…
In Cobh, there is a museum, Titanic Experience, located in the actual White Star Line offices. The dock still exists, in poor shape now, and the tour of the museum takes you to the balcony from which family and friends waved their goodbyes to loved ones. It’s a fascinating exhibit, tastefully done, and was well worth the stop in the lovely seaside village.
