We flew Aer Lingus from Shannon to Heathrow… the flight left just a few minutes late but we landed in London on time. Once again, we arrived in a new country without any local currency in our pockets. Since the flight was considered domestic, we didn’t need to clear customs and after claiming our baggage, we found an ATM and withdrew some cash. Research taught us that a cab ride from the airport to our hotel would set us back close to $100 USD, so instead, we followed signs for the Tube, located the Piccadilly line and transferred to the Jubilee line at Green Park. The fare for this was about £4 each. Even though we really only had a day and a half in London, navigating the Tube lines quickly became old hand to us.
We were staying at The London Bridge Hotel, just a few blocks from the London Bridge Tube station. Of course, we walked in the wrong direction at first, but still made our way to the hotel in just a few minutes. Our room was ready when we arrived, we dropped our bags and then headed out for a walk along the Thames. The Wimbledon men’s final was taking place just a few miles away from us, we went to a pub and watched along with locals on the television screens. (Sadly, Roger lost, but we do like Novak as well)
After watching the match we realized that we were hungry and looked for a place to eat. We walked for a bit, and ended up back at the same place we’d watched the Wimbledon final! I was devastated to learn that I’d missed the Sunday roast by just a short while… I could have had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding in England! Next time….
Here are a few photos that we shot on our first day in London.
